Coffee lovers who live for black coffee would find the Philips Grind & Brew Coffee Maker as an interesting choice. It is the only drip-type, bean-to-cup machine that houses two bean containers and allow you to grind both simultaneously to create a unique-tasting coffee.

Released in June 2013, the Grind & Brew Coffee Maker from Philips is fully customizable, which means you can control the strength, water quantity and other options simply by turning the knob. This machine is ideal for individuals, couples, and even a small office.

Product Features

The main feature of Philips’ Grind & Brew Coffee Maker is the dual bean hopper, which gives you the option to mix beans as you please. You can still select just one type of beans though, but the added feature of blending beans is an attractive idea, particularly for those who love to experiment with their coffee.

Integrated Grinder

Like all bean-to-cup machines, this Philips model has a built-in grinder. At the top of the machine, separating the two bean containers, lie two knobs where you can set grinding preferences. The first knob lets you choose which bean to grind (1,2,or both), while the lower knob lets you specify how course or fine you want your ground coffee. The second customization is quite important, since it directly affects how strong or weak the brewed coffee will be.

Pre-set Brewing Time

Another key feature of the Philips Grind & Brew Coffee Maker is the integrated timer, which allows you to pre-set brewing times. With this function, you can wake-up from the smell of your favorite, freshly brewed coffee without pushing any button. Or schedule your afternoon coffee break. The options for this are endless!

This coffee maker also has a drip stop function, letting you interrupt the brewing process whenever you like.

User-oriented design

Everything about this bean-to-cup machine has been carefully designed to be easy for the user. You won’t need special skills to adjust settings, since the brewing knobs are self-explanatory and its LCD display where you could choose number of cup, coffee strength, timer, or grind-off features.

The Philips’ Grind & Brew Coffee Maker also has a water level indicator at the back of the machine. It lights up to indicate how many cups you can create with the level of water currently in the tank.

Power-saving Feature

The machine automatically shuts off after 2 hours from brewing a batch of coffee. This could be a plus or a deal breaker, depending on the user. Some may find this feature annoying, but the savings in power consumption will surely benefit anyone.

No-fuss Maintenance

All the plastic parts, from the bean container to the water tank, drip tray and coffee dispenser spout can be removed and cleaned via a dishwasher.

Product Specifications and Technical details

Out of the box, the Philips Grind & Brew Coffee Maker includes the machine unit, a filter basket, filter basket holder, bean container, glass jug, cleaning brush and manual. One thing that’s missing with this bean-to-cup machine is a reusable mesh filter, which could have been a great money saving feature since you wouldn’t have to buy paper filters. You can, however, buy a separate mesh filter, or just stick with a traditional number 4 paper filter (which works best with this model).

This coffee maker is a space-saver and has a very modern look. It was made with a mix of silver stainless steel plates hugging the sides and back of the machine, with shiny black plastic parts for the front panel and bean hopper. The Grind & Brew coffee maker also has non-slip feet, which is great if you’re placing this machine permanently on one spot of your kitchen. It measures only 277 x 212 x 440 mm and weighs 4.6 kilograms.

The water tank can accommodate up to 1.2 litres of water.

This machine operates at 1000 peak watt and plugs into 230 volt outlet. It comes with a 2-year warranty for parts and repairs.

User Reviews

  • Thomas Furness – (5/5) “Superb, once we had experimented with the settings and our preference of coffee beans, found that the instructions included with the machine where giving us coffee that was 50% too strong, so just used those as a bench mark! Can not fault this purchase now we have it set to our liking ,excellent bit of kit.”

  • Tina – (4/5) “Nice coffee maker, it would have been 5 star if it had included directions in English and a UK plug. Couldn’t use it until we got a plug to fit a European plug. Still getting used to but it seems to be working fine. Coffee is good and it gives you lot of options for it.”

  • Kayan – (5/5) “Absolutely amazing .. the smell and taste in the morning! love it”

  • Lorraine Burgess – (5/5) “Great bought as a present”

  • Ruth Stewart – (t/5) “Love it! It is so easy to use &’you can set the strength you like easily.what II really like about it is that you are not tied to a certain type of bean & you can even make your own blend of coffee using 2 different types of beans. My favourite thing is that you can set the timer so that you are waking up to a fresh pot of coffee in the morning. Would definitely recommend!”

  • Mr. Clear – (5/5) “Great item, nice machine, thanks.”

  • Lou2014 – (4/5) “I love this philips grind and brew, it save time and as well as brew a very well, rich and strong coffee. Love it! However, the knob adjusted for bean and number of cups has some problem, it wasn’t smooth initially and the button stay stucked, but now seemingly working fine.”

  • Rexy – (5/5) “The coffee was fantastic and at a good temperature. I am very happy with this machine and glad I made the choice to buy this one.”

  • Serkan – (4/5) “It makes tasteful coffee in few minutes. It keeps the same taste for longer too.”

  • Shane D. – (4/5) “I’ve been using this machine for about a month now and can honestly say it’s changed my mornings. I know filter is not a huge trend in SA yet, but I have come to really love a properly brewed cup of filter coffee.”

  • Freda D. – (5/5) “To wake up with the smell of freshly ground coffee is such a big spoil! The machine works very well and is user friendly. The instruction was a bit difficult to understand, until you grasp how the writers thought. I am not a gadget person, but this is in a different league.”

  • Chene F. – (5/5) “Got this coffee machine about a week ago, and so far it has exceeded my expectations. It has a function to adjust the coarseness of the beans, and I love how you get to mix 2 types of beans. The coffee is also nice and hot. I do find the brewing strength to be a bit on the strong side (even on “one bean”), but luckily I like strong coffee. In a nutshell I would recommend this product to anyone who appreciates a good cuppa joe. Still to be seen would be the durability, but let’s hope it lasts a good while :-)”
